Naomi's Journal

Yesterday is a memory, Tomorrow is a mystery and today is a gift - which is why it is called the present.

This is the journal of a little girl and her family living with Short Bowel Syndrome

Lilypie5th Birthday Ticker

Naomi was born with most of her bowel missing - she had 30cm of jejunum and nothing else up to the ascending colon. These were joined together when she was a day old.
Her bowel was very dilated and did not function well - she was only able to tolerate 2-3mls of milk per hour and got the rest of her nutrition from TPN (an intravenous fluid)
When she was 3 months old she had an operation (a Bianchi) which reshaped and lengthened her bowel.
For Naomi the operation meant that she could tolerate much larger volumes of milk and she has now been off TPN since July 2004.
Unfortunately long term use of TPN can cause liver damage and Naomi was waitlisted for liver transplant in September 2004 but amazingly her liver has shown signs of improvement and she was suspended from the list in January 2005.
